Got a "rejected" message on your Dubai visa application? It's frustrating, especially when your flights and hotel are already planned. The good news: most Dubai visa rejections for Indian travellers come down to a handful of fixable problems, and many people get approved on the second try.
UAE immigration doesn't usually tell you the exact reason for a rejection. But from experience, the causes are almost always one of the ten below. Here's what they are, and how to reapply the right way (updated October 2026).
10 common reasons Dubai visas get rejected
1. Passport validity or condition
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your travel date. Damaged passports — torn pages, water damage, a loose cover — can also cause problems.
Fix: Renew your passport if it's close to expiry or damaged, then reapply with the new one.
2. Unclear passport scan
A blurry, cropped or dark scan where the details or the MRZ lines (the two lines of code at the bottom) can't be read is one of the most common reasons for a rejection or "returned" application.
Fix: Scan the full first and last pages in colour, in good light, with all four corners visible.
3. Photo doesn't meet the rules
Selfies, photos with a coloured background, glasses, shadows or a cropped head often get rejected.
Fix: Use a recent passport-size photo with a plain white background, face fully visible, no glasses and a neutral expression.
4. Details don't match your passport
A spelling difference in your name, a wrong date of birth or a mistyped passport number is enough to get your application rejected.
Fix: Copy every detail exactly as it appears on your passport — including the order of your first name and surname.
5. Missing or unconfirmed return ticket
The UAE wants to see that you will leave. A missing, dummy or mismatched onward/return ticket can count against you.
Fix: Submit a confirmed return or onward ticket with dates that match your visa.
6. Accommodation proof issues
If your hotel booking doesn't cover your whole stay, or your host's details are incomplete, the application can be questioned.
Fix: Provide a confirmed booking for every night — or, if you're staying with family, the host's address and Emirates ID/visa copy.
7. Previous overstay or unpaid fines in the UAE
If you've overstayed before, have unpaid fines, or left a previous visa or job in the UAE without closing it properly, new applications are often blocked.
Fix: Clear any fines and close old visa issues with GDRFA (Dubai) or ICP (other emirates) before reapplying. See our guide: What Happens If I Overstay My UAE Tourist Visa?
8. Security check or "name match"
Every application goes through a security check. Sometimes an applicant's name matches someone on a watch list — this happens more often with very common names.
Fix: Make sure your full name, father's name and date of birth are entered correctly. If you keep getting rejected with a clean record, your visa agent can ask the authorities for clarification.
9. Wrong visa type for your purpose
Applying for a tourist visa when you're really going to work, look for a job or do business can lead to rejection.
Fix: Choose the right visa — tourist, visit (family/friends), business or job-seeker — for the real purpose of your trip.
10. Duplicate applications
Applying through more than one agent or website at the same time creates duplicate files, and the system often rejects one or both.
Fix: Apply through one channel only, and wait for a final result before trying again.
Bonus: weak financial proof (5-year visa)
For the 5-year multiple-entry tourist visa, you must show a 6-month bank statement with a balance of around USD 4,000 (or the equivalent). Low or irregular balances are a common reason for rejection on this visa.
Is a rejection the same as a ban?
No. A rejection is not automatically a travel ban. Most rejections are about documents and can be fixed straight away. Only an official confirmation from the UAE authorities means you have a ban.
How to reapply after a Dubai visa rejection
- Find out the likely reason. Ask your visa agent for any note or code from the rejection.
- Fix that specific problem. Don't just resend the same documents — that usually gives the same result.
- Clear any old issues like fines or an un-cancelled previous visa.
- Double-check every document: passport validity, scan quality, photo, ticket and hotel booking.
- Reapply through one trusted channel and pay the visa fee again (government fees are usually not refunded after a rejection).
For document problems, you can usually reapply within a day or two. If the issue was an old fine or security check, sort that out first.
Tip: You may not need a visa in advance
Indian passport holders who have a valid US visa or Green Card, or a UK or EU residence permit, may be eligible for a visa on arrival in the UAE. Check the latest eligibility rules before you fly.
